Section 4: Reading Comprehension (15%)

Read the following passage, and answer the questions.

Although Dorothy Smith was convinced that her journal entries were not literature, her brother William did not agree, and he used them in some of his poems. He changed her journal entries only by using the first-person pronoun, “I.” Although William’s use of his sister’s writing has been criticized, the important question concerning the relationship between these two siblings is not whether William’s use of his sister’s writing was honest, but how the relationship contributed to his sister’s inability to appreciate herself as a skillful writer.

In literature, the use of the pronoun “I” is usually seen as masculine. This understanding of “I” as masculine dominates other elements found in literature. Any other elements in literature are traditionally viewed as passive and feminine. These other elements are known as “the other” in literature. In William’s poems, he often used his sister Dorothy as a character representing Nature. Nature (and thus Dorothy) were “the other” in his poems. While the unusual roles William and Dorothy played as siblings and writers helped to maintain their close relationship in real life, they also led Dorothy to view herself not as a skilled writer, but only as an unimportant “other.” Thus, her understanding of herself as an author was blocked. Not only was she a woman in a time when women were not treated equally, but also she accepted a submissive role in her brother’s life and poetry.

1.      The passage is primarily concerned with answering which of the following questions?

1.      How and whether Dorothy Smith was aware of her role in her relationship with her brother

2.      Whether Dorothy Smith was exploited by her brother’s use of her journal entries

3.      How William Smith altered his sister’s writing in his own poems

4.      How Dorothy Smith’s relationship with her brother strengthened her assumptions about herself

2.      It can be inferred from the passage that the author believes which of the following about Dorothy Smith’s journal entries?

1.        They are skillful, but they are not literature

2.        They are more emotional then her brother’s poetry

3.        They exceed her own opinion of their merit

4.        They borrow many ideas from her brother’s work

3.      Which of the following best captures the meaning of the word “understanding” as it is used in the next-to-last sentence of the passage?

1.        Appreciation by a writer of the value of personal beliefs

2.        Awareness by a writer that his or her points of view may change

3.        Observation of the differences between an author’s values and those of others

4.        Acceptance by a writer of his or her own identity as a writer
